Sophie Ruth Donaldson
COSTUME DESIGN & CREATION
Sophie is a costume designer & creator, working across multiple disciplines, specialising in costumes for movement, contemporary dance and performance art, exploring costume as a storytelling device, a communication tool through which to understand, reflect and change the world around them. They are interested in how it feels to wear a costume as well as what it looks like.
Recent projects include costume styling for photoshoots and short films with The National Theatre (‘Grapes of Wrath’, ‘The Crucible’ ), costume supervising for Hofesh Shechter Company (‘Theatre of Dreams’, ‘For England With Love’, ‘Light Bach Dances’ ), Botis Seva’s Far From The Norm (‘Until We Sleep’ and ‘BLKDOG’) and a costume collaboration with Theo Clinkard for Manchester International Festival (‘The F**gots & Their Friends Between The Revolutions’ ).
Sophie also works with Patricia Villirillo on costumes for live performance, music videos, photoshoots and special events with bands including The 1975, Japanese House, Bleachers, Beabadoobee and Pale Waves.
Sophie is a Costume Tutor at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, an Associate Lecturer in Performance Costume and Collaborative Practice at University of the Arts London and also teaches on the Costume Design For Performance short course at Central Saint Martins.
Currently they are also researching and writing a book on queer costume.
